ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection)FAQs

Are there extra costs for ICSI?

Yes. ICSI usually carries an additional laboratory fee on top of standard IVF costs.

  • Some of this may be rebated by Medicare for eligible patients

  • Out-of-pocket costs will be outlined in your financial consent before treatment

How is ICSI different from standard IVF?

The key difference is how fertilisation occurs:

  • Conventional IVF – Eggs are placed in a dish with many motile sperm and fertilisation happens “naturally” in the lab environment

  • ICSI – An embryologist injects a single sperm directly into each mature egg under a microscope

ICSI is particularly useful when sperm numbers, movement or shape are reduced, or when there has been previous fertilisation failure.
